FAQs

What’s with the flying fish?

They’re pretty much the coolest, real life representation of tenacity, although they don’t actually, “fly.” They catapult themselves out of the water at high rates of speed and then use their wing-like pectoral fins to glide. Um…that’s pretty spectacular.  Against all odds, they do what they want to do, on their terms. That’s always resonated with us. Also, there’s a personal connection between the fascinating creatures and our many trips to Catalina Island, off the coast of Southern California. When working with Mallory (RoShamBo Marketing + Creative) to design the logo, there was much back and forth of ideas and we had a good idea of the vibe we wanted. During a night of insomnia, Alex kept staring at one of her paintings of a flying fish and then realized just how many images of flying fish had been collected over the years. Fish are integral in an aquaponic system, so it was a natural fit. Images were sent to Mallory and what ensued was creativity on steroids.

Aquaponics needs water, right? Don’t you use a massive amount of water?

In order for plants to grow, they do need water, yes. Also, fish live in water…big surprise. So, yes, we do use water. However, all of the water in the system is recirculated, apart from what is lost through evaporation and transpiration through plant leaves. Our system uses less water per month than a family of 4.

Do you have merch?

Not yet, but we will, and when we do…it will be epic. Stay tuned!

May I visit the greenhouse?

Not at this time. Ultimately, we do want to offer greenhouse tours and we will update the website when that can happen. The greenhouse is a controlled environment. Literally, it is a giant enclosed ecosystem and there are protocols in place to ensure the safety of the ecosystem and quality of product.

Are you hiring?

Having people inquire about employment is a HUGE compliment! Farming is not instantaneous and it takes time to get from intentional, scaffolded planting to weekly harvests. At this very moment in time, we are not hiring any additional employees.

Do you have plans to expand in the future?

Gunni Gal is more than just a greenhouse growing produce. The brand represents a vehicle for increasing local commerce, expansion of vocational opportunities for populations often put in the periphery, experiential education, research in regenerative agricultural practices, and, most of all, positive support for a well-loved and growing community…with a big side of rock and roll. We’ve only just begun…

Are you growing marijuana?

No.

Will you ever grow marijuana?

No.

Can I rent space from you so that I can grow marijuana?

No.

What are you growing?

This will largely be determined by demand. Varietals of lettuce, leafy greens, bok choi, microgreens, herbs, tomatoes and peppers are all very likely to be regulars.

Are you using ditch water?

No. Agricultural water is not a viable option for an aquaponic system because the probability of contaminates in the water is too high.

Where can I buy your produce?

Gunni Gal typically delivers onTuesdays (late afternoon) to Gunnison Vitamin and Health and on Wednesday mornings to Mountain Earth in Crested Butte. Additionally, we are working with the following local restaurants in Gunnison and Crested Butte that wish to bring local, responsibly grown, and vibrant produce to their establishments: Mario’s, Patcharee’s Kitchen, and Sunflower.

May I come pick up greens from the farm?

Not at this time. The only option for purchasing greens is through a retail store: Gunnison Vitamin in Gunnison or Mountain Earth in CB.

What kind of fish are in your system?

We are beginning with mainly tilapia because they are extremely hearty and tolerant of water temperature fluctuations. The temperature of the water is a crucial component of healthy fish life and crop choice. There will also be a couple of Plecostomus as they play a role in keeping the area clean and free of algae. We might include Koi.

Are you selling the fish?

The tilapia will be sold for consumption. However, because we begin with fingerlings, it will be 10-12 months post production start before they reach ideal weight for harvesting.

Are you nice to the fish?

This operation is grounded in a love of nature and reverence for the cycle of life. Also, this is our legacy and dream and everything in the greenhouse and overall business operation is approached from a place of supreme gratitude. We are grateful for the immense sun, finite and precious water, beneficial bacteria, fish, and plants for the part each plays in allowing us all to eat. In return, the fish are given plenty of space, high quality food, clean water, and above all…respect.
